The Future of Data at Snowflake Data Cloud Summit 2024
Date of creation : 2024-06-24

From June 3 to 6 this year, the Snowflake Data Cloud Summit was held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. With over 500 sessions focused on AI, Apps, and Data, it was reported that more than 20,000 attendees visited. As Snowflake's first premier partner in the country, Megazone Cloud had to be present at this Summit! I asked Team Leader Choi Kyung-jin, who felt the excitement on-site as a Snowflake Data Superhero, for his feedback.
Q: What was the atmosphere like at the Snowflake Data Cloud Summit 2024?
This year, a new CEO, AI expert Sridhar Ramaswamy, took office at Snowflake. Perhaps due to this influence, unlike the last Summit that emphasized data clouds, there was a strong focus on AI/ML. We were able to see updates on new AI features such as Cortex AI, Document AI that helps with semi-structured data extraction, and the LLM model Arctic, along with news of new service GA. Particularly, Sridhar's presentation as the keynote speaker on the first day clearly highlighted Snowflake's strategic focus.
"In the era of enterprise AI, we aim to provide a solution that accommodates all languages and runtime requirements as a single product (platform), focusing on simplification to offer convenience while also providing governance suitable for enterprises."
Q: If there was something impressive during the keynote, please share!
Each day of the event had distinct keynote presentations, but personally, I found the keynote on the third day the most interesting. It introduced what can be attempted through Snowflake in a way that was easy for general users to understand, using a role-play format to depict a fictional food truck startup called 'Tasty Bytes' that builds a data collection pipeline and establishes an analysis environment.
This year, it was particularly enjoyable to see the process of integrating and analyzing reviews written in various languages using AI, and solving the task of distributing them in the form of a chatbot using actual Snowflake services such as Cortex LLM in SQL, Cortex Search, and Streamlit.
Q: I heard that a lot of new technologies were introduced this time; what was the most popular response on-site?

I think it was probably the Polaris Catalog announced during the keynote on the second day. The Polaris Catalog is an open data catalog service that allows data queries between vendors without being locked into a specific vendor, based on the Iceberg Rest API.
Therefore, through the Polaris Catalog, users can read and write data owned by various vendors supporting Polaris Catalog, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Salesforce, Confluent, etc., without restrictions, eliminating the data silos that existed as another barrier between vendors.
Q: As a Snowflake Data Superhero, I imagine your feelings about participating in this conference were quite special; how was it?

The Snowflake Data Superhero title is awarded to individuals who have actively participated in community activities such as webinars, presentations, and content creation based on their experience and expertise in data cloud. This year, 20 new data superheroes were announced from around the world, including Japan, India, Canada, and the United States, and I am honored to be selected as one of them. (Haha)
At this summit, there were goods provided for Data Superheroes, and an event to create characters was also prepared, allowing me to enjoy the event with even more pride.
Q: Oh, by the way, I heard there was good news for Megazone Cloud too? Please share the news about being selected as this year's Data Cloud Service Innovation Partner.

Yes, as you mentioned earlier, Megazone Cloud is the first Snowflake premier partner in Korea, and at this Summit, we received the award for 'Data Cloud Service Innovation Partner of the Year.'
Since Megazone Cloud is the only company selected as this year's partner among Snowflake's domestic partners, it is even more meaningful. I am happy to be recognized as a partner with top-notch technical skills in consulting and building data platforms through this award.
